"Reflection on Change" by Sarel Venter
"Free in its wide expanse, the water plays ceaselessly. In answer to the turn of the globe it glides, in response to the call of the moon it leaps and constantly it reaches high to fly in waves with the wind.
Always moving, by definition, it makes its way around the world. When the mood moves it, it will visit the heavens and rain down on the stubborn ground to roll back to the source. On dreary days it will hang around as fog, tempting the horns to go hoarse.
But when it reaches land, it rebels against the constraint, and fights the bond without ceasing. The sentinel of land, celebrating its different choice, stands patiently against the constant onslaught. It hardly notices the licking at its shores, the relentless erosion of its resolve.
Without success Terra Firma tries to tame the wild body that cannot find a home, tries to show the way, by example for matter, to behave. It has always been where they meet, that life takes place. For, in the difference between lies the potential for life.
Only in this brief space, where change is possible within the shelter of stability, can life start and grow.
So you will find them in discourse on any day; a silent conversation, pleasant to listen to on some days, a roaring shouting match with violence in the air on others. Even as they are different, so they must co-exist. For the sea cannot be contained without the shore, and the land, without the water, would be dead.
This conversation gave life to you and me, and continues to feed us this day. When the song of the sea plays harp with your heart, do not ask why, for it is none other than the first mother and the first father reminding you of the nursing rhymes called when you were formed.
Staring at the balance, also inside ourselves, we fade in time and in keeping with that old tradition, constantly erode our firm understanding with the fluid wit of individual rejuvenation.
It is where the sea meets the land that we see the reflection, and in it, recognize ourselves.
Let there be love,
Sarel Venter
